It was exhibited to a stunned Paris, acquired by the state, then considered too politically inflammatory to display and locked away for several years. Today it hangs in the Louvre and is one of the most recognisable images in the history of French art. Delacroix was also fascinated by colour theory in a way that bordered on obsessive — he kept detailed notes on colour relationships and interactions that directly influenced Van Gogh and the Impressionists decades after his death. He believed that colour should take precedence over line, that emotion should drive composition, and that the job of the artist was to make the viewer feel something rather than merely observe something.
