This Dutch Golden Age painter wasn’t just a master of portraits; he was also a bit of a chameleon. Born in 1597, van Bijlert initially trained in Utrecht and later became one of the key figures in the Utrecht Caravaggisti movement, which means he was one of the Dutch artists who found a lot of inspiration in the dramatic lighting and dark, moody realism of Caravaggio’s work.
